Still cannot see .

Me neither.

Hi,
We are intending to camp in Marakele and Mapungubwe Parks in August, would like to tow trailer to camp sites. Vehicle is a Hyundai Terracan so no problem with that but interested to know condition of roads and whether they suitable for non 4 x 4 trailer??

We are camping in Mapungubwe during the latter part of August; I am already in possession of the map you have suggested, I was hoping to obtain something with more detail.

There is a little map book available on Mapungubwe, but it is not widely available. The only place I know that sells it is a little spaza shop on the main road near to the Pont drift border post. It is not sold in the park itself. This book is excellent.

I am not aware of any other option, but what is available on this site.

When driving from reception at the main entrance, to the camp site, DO NOT take the Den Staat road. It is a dirt road, and really not a pleasure to drive. It is wide, really bumpy and lots of rocks, and you don't tend to see that much.

Rather drive around the park on the main road, and enter on the Pont Drift side. That dirt road is in a better condition, and much shorter. Also, driving around the park gives you some of the most spectacular views in the entire park, of some of the most amazing rock formations and baobabs.

I'm going up for the first week in July will post some pic's once I'm back.

@ jacqueline57 don't even attempt getting lost in Polokwane looking for Pick n Pay, take off on the left hand toll booths at the Nyl toll plaza and go through Mokopane (ex Potgietersrus).

Pick n Pay is at the Mokopane Mall in the first or second block of central business district, and Checkers and Woolworths is in another mall a couple of blocks further along the main street (Thabo Mbeki Avenue). Both are on the right going north.

The Pick n Pay centre has better parking and we had our picnic lunch there at the car in some shade. You have to go out at the back and round the block to get back on to Thabo Mbeki Ave to go north.

There is also a Fruit & Veg City further along, also on the right. It is a nice little town with everything you would need for your trip.

Enjoy your trip. Mapungubwe is magnificent.

I have been to Marakele with a none 4x4 trailer & Mapungupwe without the trailer. Access to both is absolutely no problem at all. Your Tuscon should cope admirably.

I've got to agree with Imberbe about that Den Staat road in Mapungupwe ..... It's a shaker and rattler of note...... Rather go straight on and turn right at the T junction.

Both places are chalk and cheese apart, where Marakele is a perfect camping site, Mapungupwe has something wild about it...... Both were exceptionally enjoyable....

Hi boys and girls

PLEASE I need some advice and don't shout at me if all the answers are right here under my nose, I've had very little time to read all the posts

I've not been in SA for a long time but on my way back and planning to visit Mapungubwe the 1st or 2nd week of Aug. I can only stay in the park for 4-5 days. What can you suggest, where should I stay for the best game viewing, I was looking at Leokwe and Forest Tentet Camp and they both look very nice.

I live in Indonesia now but the withdrawal symptoms are getting the better of me and I want to come home and spend some time in the bush.

I've never been to the park so I though of giving it a try......I'm a Kgalagadi boy but got TOTTALY depresses when I saw a fully booked all the capms are

Hi Gila,

the distances within the park are not that large. You can do all the roads staying wherever you like. I have visited Mapungubwe four times and spent several days at both camps. I was always lucky at the Forest Tented Camp with Elephants and antilope around the waterhole there. But both camps are really nice.

Hi Gila I am so pleased that you can go in August and I hope that you have a stunning time.

I have never stayed in the Limpopo tented camp and would dearly love to spend a couple of nights there. That is mainly to catch the late afternoon activity at the hide. This is not possible if you stay only at Leokwe.

In saying that, I do believe that Leokwe is a very special camp. I was there in June and enyoyed every minute of it.

The first time I went to Mapungubwe I saw more game in the western section, the second time, the eastern side. My advice would be a couple of nights at both Limpopo and Leokwe. Good luck and enjoy
