But... the largest biome in South Africa is not the grassland OR karoo biome!! It is in fact the savanna biome!!

Hokay, here goes:

When hunting buffalo, lion have an equal chance of making the kill as they do of being ‘treed’ or otherwise chased away.

Let's take a stab and guess true, though I wonder whether they're successful as much as 50% of the time. That is unless you speak of the prides that specialise in buffalo, which probably have a higher success rate.

false? They are usually only successfull an average of 1 in 5 hunting attempts?

Their "strike rate" is very low - 1 in 5 is probably about right.
