Sasol/Glendower Agulhas Birding Weekend a success

The Sasol/Glendower Agulhas Birding Weekend took place very successfully during the 17-19 October 2008. Forty birders took part consisting of Bird Clubs and family groups mainly from Cape Town, the Boland and Overberg regions.

Wilderness Birding Experience "The Best"

The inaugural Sasol Wilderness Birding Experience finished yesterday after 5 days of concentrated bird watching in 17 venues in the Garden Route and Klein Karoo. Hosted by the local SANParks Honorary Rangers and with the help of six volunteer guides the event was voted a resounding success by visiting birdwatchers from all around the country.

Beginner's Birding Course in Kruger National Park

The West Rand Honorary Rangers are proud to present their inaugral Beginner's Birding Course in Kruger National Park in October 2008. The event will be run along similar lines to the region's very successful Kruger Birding Weekend, which is held in January each year, and sponsored by SASOL.

Support the Lowveld/KNP Large Bird Project

The Endangered Wild Life Trust's 'Birds of Prey Working Group' (EWT-BoPWG) recently launched a Lowveld/Kruger National Park (KNP) Large Bird Project. To support this project, the group are looking at working with SANParks to provide training to Field Rangers on the identification and monitoring of some of the key large bird species in the Kruger National Park.

The Pelican Challenge on the West Coast

The near-threatened Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) is arguably the largest fish-eating seabird endemic to the South African West Coast. It can be recognised in flight by its huge wingspan, S-shaped neck, long beak, its penchant for soaring in thermals and for flying in formation. Some call it the Jumbo Jet of the birds.

Angels on an Avian Mission

What do you get when you send a bunch of women on a mission to find a Pel’s Fishing owl, armed with CyberTracker equipment and a mandate to raise funds for SANParks? You get Angels on an Avian Mission of course, the name given to a fund and awareness raising expedition made up of six SANParks staff and forum members who recently returned from Kruger National Park after successfully finding the Pel’s Fishing Owl (of course), as well as achieving a number of other serious and not so serious objectives.

Birding the SANParks' Routes' with Birdlife SA

South Africa’s National Parks form key locations in Birdlife SA’s Birding Route Network. Birding Routes are a way of linking birding locations for birding travellers to enable them to either maximise a continuous journey by visiting several proximate locations on a single trip, or to explore regions more thoroughly by sampling different locations on separate trips.

Draft Report On The Pel’s Fishing Owl

Implementing Patagial Tagging on Vultures in Southern Africa

Bird ringing has been used in southern Africa for almost 60 years as a cost-effective method to study many aspects of the biology of a wide range of species, including raptors. The first birds to be ringed in South Africa were a group of 31 Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres) nestlings at the Kranzberg colony in Limpopo in 1948.
