Knysna’s Forest Elephant makes a special appearance just before the holiday season

An excited forest ranger phoned in to report sightings of Knysna’s only forest elephant on the 26th of November. Hylton Herd from Scientific Services, SANParks Garden Route rushed to the Diepwalle Forest, near the Big Tree, and took these pictures, the best on file to date.

KNYSNA, South Africa, June 5, 2007 (ENS) - DNA analysis has revealed the existence of five previously unknown, female Knysna elephants in the Southern Cape region at the tip of South Africa. Researchers say the discovery is reason for cautious optimism that the world's most southerly elephant population may have survived the onslaught of ivory hunters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

N2 Closure and Detour Maps

One lane of the N2 at Kaaimans Pass between Knysna and George has re-openned for one directional traffic. Vehicles must not exceed a loaded weight of a a maximum of 5 tons if using this route, and delays of approximately 40 minutes either way are expected. The National Park authorities in this region are in constant communication with the disaster management team and structural engineers involved in managing the damage to the roads, and will provide further information on the situation as it becomes available. Traveller's can also use the old Knysna-George route via Saasveld. Please find the map of the detour attached herewith.

Flooding in Knysna

Please note that due to extremely heavy and continuing rain, Knysna National Lake Area will not be contactable, and the public are advised to avoid travelling extensively in the area. There is wide spread flooding and many of the roads are in poor conditions. Emergency services are attending to the situation, and we will post updates on the website as and when they come through.

Timber Auction

There will be a sale of ± 1000 m³ of FSC certified (Certificate Number: SGS-FM/COC-1231)indignous and blackwood logs in the Southern Cape and Tsitsikamma State Forents on Tuesday 18th July 2006 and Wenesday 19 July 2006.

Knysna and the Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are known for their exquisite timbers . This auction is the main platform whereby most of the indigenous timber furniture manufacturers can obtain their timber logs. Some of these manufacturers export their final products to Europe and beyond. This is an event that only happens twice or three times a year.

December started with the Garden Route region being expanded  by an additional ± 80 000 hectares of indigenous forest and fynbos, as well as the elusive Knysna Elephants.
